ORAS ZU SPOTLIGHT!What is the ZU Spotlight you might be asking? Well, this will be a thread where every so often we will be bringing attention to pokemon that might be either overlooked, underappreciated, or even undiscovered in the ZU metagame. If you have any sets to provide or have your own analysis on the spotlighted pokemon feel free to do so here. Only rule is to just keep on topic and don't just suggest the pokemon to be spotlighted, we will probably get to it eventually, but just try to be patient as things are a bit slow here. The current Spotlighted Pokemon of ZU is: HP: 55 Attack: 40 Defense: 50 Sp. Atk: 65 Sp. Def: 85 Speed: 40 Abilities: Water Absorb, Cursed Body, Damp (HA) With access to a good amount of support moves from to Taunt and Will-o-Wisp, reliable recovery, a defensive typing that grants it two immunities and a handful of useful resistances, and an ability that grants it recovery from Water moves, Frillish seems to be yet another NFE that goes unnoticed by some. Is it a useful Rapid Spin blocker and water resist over say Gourgeist, or is it already dead in the water? Previous spotlights:

Ok so Mienfoo is a great pivot mon in FU thanks to its ability in Regenerator and its relatively high Attack stat. Its one of the only few viable Fighting types in the tier after Scraggy and is a great mon to use on Volturn teams in general. Here are the two sets I have been running as of late: Mienfoo @ Choice Scarf Ability: Regenerator / Reckless EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe Jolly Nature - High Jump Kick - Knock Off - Stone Edge - U-turn Scarf Mienfoo is a great revenge killer and overall fast mon due to High Jump Kick's power and its ability to quickly pivot out thanks to U-Turn. Renegenerator is the main ability to use thanks to it healing 33% of its health every time it switches out, but Reckless can also be used for the offensive route increasing High Jump Kick's already insane BP. With the Choice Scarfed equipped, Mienfoo is now able to outspeed and threaten offensive pokemon such as Simipour, Simisage, Electabuzz, etc, which can be huge for certain balance builds. Mienfoo @ Eviolite Ability: Regenerator EVs: 216 HP / 96 Atk / 196 Spe Adamant Nature - Drain Punch / High Jump Kick - Knock Off - Taunt - U-turn Ok so this is a bulky Mienfoo set that I created myself and allows it to be surprisingly really tanky with the Eviolite equipped. This can be very useful for teams who need key resistances to common offensive typing attacks in Rock and Dark. Drain Punch and Regenerator greatly increase its longevity and help sustain its usefulness throughout the match as well. Here are some calcs to show off its bulk: 252 SpA Life Orb Simipour Hydro Pump vs. 216 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Mienfoo: 222-263 (77.8 - 92.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO 4 SpA Life Orb Simisage Leaf Storm vs. 216 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Mienfoo: 208-246 (72.9 - 86.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO +2 0 Atk Klang Gear Grind (2 hits) vs. 216 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Mienfoo: 206-246 (72.2 - 86.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO 252 SpA Choice Specs Electabuzz Thunderbolt vs. 216 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Mienfoo: 205-243 (71.9 - 85.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO 252 Atk Choice Band Lopunny Return vs. 216 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Mienfoo: 202-238 (70.8 - 83.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO People should defintely start tyring this mon out if you haven't already

I'd say reckless is 100% the choice for scarf mienfoo, the boost gives it enough to get a kill on the Simis, Pidgeot, Golduck, Wigglytuff, Magmar etc after rocks, and also lets it 2hko spdef Wartortle after rocks. Generally just makes it hit really, really hard, and it's not surviving enough hits to take advantage of regen on scarf tbh.
But yeah, it's a pretty good mon. Versatile between scarf and evio sets, although scarf is all I really have experience with- it used to be really, really good but a lot of fighting-resist mons rose in prominence soon after so I haven't used it much recently. An easy core is it and Murkrow, both bring lots of power and revenge killing capabilities, and Krow can pursuit ghosts for Mien and Mien clears out the likes of Lairon and Gigalith for Krow.

>when no one brings up Stat Pass Mienfoo Alright, after a much too long break, here is the next FU spotlight!
HP: 55
Atk: 40
Def: 50
SpA: 65
SpD: 85
Spe: 40

So I've tried out Frillish as of late, and I can say it's surprisingly effective. Water/Ghost typing, Cursed Body and Water Absorb as abilities, and utility moves in WoW, Taunt and Recover really differentiate it from other bulky waters like Wartortle, Walrein and Chinchou. These notable characteristics give Frillish quite a few niches.
- As mentioned before, it's unique typing and Water Absorb grant it immunities to Water-, Normal- and Fighting-type attacks, making it easy for Frillish to switch in, block Rapid Spin and force the opponent to play more carefully with certain choiced pokemon (i.e Scarf Simipour, Mienfoo)
- Able to cripple a wide range of mons with Will-O-Wisp and Taunt, such as physical attackers and general status inducing/stat boosting ones
- Having Recover is fantastic as it allows Frillish to continually heal itself and increase it's longevity
Sets
Mixed Bulk Frillish @ Eviolite Ability: Water Absorb EVs: 248 HP / 220 Def / 40 SpD Bold Nature IVs: 0 Atk - Taunt - Recover - Will-O-Wisp - Night Shade/Scald
This is the set I tried out (EVs live 1 Leaf Storm from Mixed Simisage, rest in Def). Does what it's supposed to do in the sense that it switches into a ton of things relatively easily and pivots out. Gave it 3 great utility moves in Taunt/Recover/Wisp to repeatedly check and cripple stuff like Lopunny, Magmar, Physical Murkrow, CB Licky (you fear Knock), Lairon etc and random stuff such as Duosion too. Night Shade is hear to let it damage stuff that aren't Normal-type. Frillish having little offensive pressure makes me not want to use Scald, since WoW already burns stuff.
4 SpA Life Orb Simisage Leaf Storm vs. 248 HP / 40 SpD Eviolite Frillish: 265-312 (84.6 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO 252 Atk Jumpluff Seed Bomb vs. 248 HP / 220+ Def Eviolite Frillish: 116-138 (37 - 44%) -- guaranteed 3HKO 252 Atk Life Orb Murkrow Brave Bird vs. 248 HP / 220+ Def Eviolite Frillish: 144-172 (46 - 54.9%) -- 58.6% chance to 2HKO 252+ Atk Lairon Head Smash vs. 248 HP / 220+ Def Eviolite Frillish: 157-186 (50.1 - 59.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Pretty decent on the physical side for something with 55/50/85 bulk. You Wisp em as you tank then click Recover.
Sp Def Frillish @ Eviolite Ability: Water Absorb EVs: 248 HP / 176 SpD / 84 Spe Calm Nature IVs: 0 Atk - Taunt - Recover - Will-O-Wisp/Toxic - Night Shade/Scald
This is basically a specially defensive version, creeping base 50's like Marshtomp and Carbink to Taunt them before they do anything. Toxic and Scald can be used here over Wisp/Night Shade to better stall out and damage things. This set definitely checks less pokemon in general, choosing to focus on the special attackers, but it can still hold it's weight and the speed creep is useful for Taunting. Another option is to forego the creep, run enough EVs to be 3HKO'd by Electabuzz Tbolt (248 HP/216 Sp Def Calm) and the rest in defense.
252 SpA Electabuzz Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 176+ SpD Eviolite Frillish: 138-164 (44 - 52.3%) -- 17.2% chance to 2HKO 252 SpA Electabuzz Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 216+ SpD Eviolite Frillish: 132-156 (42.1 - 49.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
Overall a decent pokemon who currently sits in D-rank. I personally believe Frillish can be at least C-rank because of it's ability to check a lot of common pokemon, is one the few spin blockers and has utility to offer that other waters simply don't.
Edit: Forgot to mention this thing has amazing synergy with Zweilous, as they cover nearly all of each others weaknesses. Other good partners include Wormadam-Sandy, Krokorok, and Dragonair.

In order of viability and usefulness: Spritzee > Snubbull > Floette Floette is essentially the same as Spritzee but with more specially oriented bulk, useless abilities, and Synthesis instead of Wish. For that reason, it doesn't really have a niche unless you would rather not use two moveslots on recovery (Wish+Protect). I guess it could try an offensive set since Floette is stronger, but even that would be pretty weak. Snubbull's niche is being a wall to the most notorious of wallbreakers: Zweilous. If you're really concerned about Zweilous for whatever reason ( Melancholy Blues), then Snubbull is a decent niche choice. Otherwise it's fairly outclassed by the other two NFE fairies since its only form of recovery is Rest. Like Floette, Snubbull could run an offensive set since it has an ok base 80 attack stat and a really good physical movepool, but...why would you want to? Spritzee, on the other hand, is everything you could want in a bulky Fairy type. Wishpassing coupled with a surprisingly decent HP stat for a LC mon, Aromatherapy, solid bulk all around, and a fantastic ability (Aroma Veil) that acts just like Lickilicky's Oblivious. If Licky ever gets banned ( /me is hoping), Spritzee is likely going to be one of the most common clerics.

I've seen a lot of people shitting on Floette recently, and this is unacceptable . I'm gonna focus on Floette/Spritzee though because they're more comparable as clerics. The main advantage Floette has is access to one-turn recovery in synthesis, which is a lot bigger than people make out. These mons are rock-neutral and don't have leftovers, and so they're not difficult to wear down throughout a match. Another factor they share is that neither are strong at all, Floette enough to 2hko Rat after rocks almost all the time but Spritzee struggles to do so after even a turn of Toxic. So the point I'm trying to convey is that you have mons that often need to heal when they come in, and simultaneously are set up bait to even some of the frailer mons in the tier. This is why synthesis is so important, because Floette can switch in, eat a hit, heal and switch out while Spritzee is forced to give the opponent a free turn with wishtect and no threat from its poor damage output, if it wants to keep itself alive. This was a much more pronounced issue when Simisear was in the tier (the last time I had to defend Floette haha) but it still applies now, because really threatening stuff like Huntail, Simis (and Magcargo uwu) can set up on that protect and at worst have to take like 40% from a moonblast. Also, access to Synthesis means Floette saves a slot and can run stuff like Calm Mind or Hidden Power Ground in its last slot to add to versatility in its role. The main downside to it is a pretty decent amount less phys def, so you shouldn't use it if you need the slot to answer to the likes of Murkrow, and it has less hp as a wishpasser (but wish/synthesis is a great combo). It does have really great spdef though, even with a phys def spread, to the point where LO Simipour can't even 2hko you without rocks. Also I don't think Aroma Veil is all too useful as the most common users of Taunt are Krok and Murkrow, who are gonna take a huge chunk/die to moonblast anyway, or Servine who doesn't need Taunt to beat these mons.
